Embassy Recommendation vs. University Recommendation
There are two doors into MEXT: the embassy track, run by the Japanese embassy in your country, and the university track, where a Japanese university nominates you directly.
The embassy track
Open to everyone, announced around April each year, and screened locally: documents, written exams, then an interview. It is the higher-volume route and the one our webinars focus on.
The university track
You apply to a specific professor or program, and the university submits your nomination. Fewer seats, but no written exams — your research fit does the talking. It suits applicants who already have a target lab and a strong academic record.
Choosing
If you don't yet have a professor who wants you, start with the embassy track. You can pursue both in the same year; a university nomination simply supersedes the embassy pipeline if it lands.
