Getting Started with the Field of Study and Research Plan

MSMaria Santos · MEXT scholar '20 · June 2026 · 12 min read

Screeners read hundreds of study plans. Yours has about ninety seconds to make three things obvious: what you want to study, why in Japan, and why you can actually do it.

Structure that works

  1. One paragraph of motivation — concrete, personal, no "since childhood".
  2. Your research question or study focus, stated plainly.
  3. Method or course pathway — show you looked up real programs and professors.
  4. What you'll do with it afterwards — Japan wants alumni who build bridges.

Tip: name two or three actual professors or labs. Nothing signals seriousness faster, and nothing is rarer.

The mistakes that sink plans

Vague topics ("international business"), copy-pasted university brochures, and plans that ignore Japan entirely — if your plan would read the same for a scholarship to Canada, rewrite it.

Bring a draft to the study-plan webinar and we'll tear it apart kindly, live.
