Understanding the MEXT Scholarship and Its Benefits

ATAiko Tanaka · MEXT scholar '21 · July 2026 · 8 min read

The stipend sounds abstract until you see real budgets. Three current scholars shared theirs.

Tokyo (university dorm)

Rent ¥35k, food ¥30k, transport ¥8k, phone ¥3k, everything else ¥25k — saves ¥15k most months. Dorms are the single biggest lever; private apartments in Tokyo eat ¥60–80k.

Osaka (shared apartment)

Rent ¥42k split two ways, food ¥28k, and a part-time conversation-school job (allowed with permission, capped hours) adds ¥30k. Comfortable.

Kanazawa (regional national university)

Rent ¥28k for a solo apartment five minutes from campus. "I eat out three times a week and still save."

The pattern: the stipend covers a real life everywhere, a comfortable one outside the big two metros.
