Understanding the MEXT Application Timeline

NENSN editorial · June 2026 · 5 min read

Every embassy publishes its own dates, but the rhythm is the same worldwide. Working backwards from an April 2027 arrival:

  • April–May 2026 — embassies announce the cycle; guidelines PDF goes live.
  • June 2026 — application window (often just 2–4 weeks — have documents ready before the announcement).
  • July 2026 — written exams: Japanese (all tracks) plus English/maths/science by track.
  • August 2026 — interviews at the embassy.
  • September 2026 — primary screening results; paperwork forwarded to Japan.
  • December 2026–January 2027 — final MEXT confirmation.
  • April 2027 — arrival and placement, usually starting with the language year.

The single most common failure mode is missing the June window because a school transcript or medical form took three weeks to issue. Order documents in May.
